For quite a number of years various products have been made in projects and institutions of the unity of Moravian Church, for example: herbs, olive oil, textiles, honey, tea, soap, handicrafts, carpets etc.. The projects or institutions which they are produced at have quite different backgrounds. We like to introduce a few:
Palestine The rehabilitation centre >star mountain< nearby the city of Ramallah takes care of youths and adults with a mental disability. In recent years they established a Vocational Training Department where they can acquire manual skills in the field of horticulture and agriculture as well as knitting and embroidery. This is a major component of integration in society.
For additional informationen please check: www.starmountain.org Tanzania Besides theological training and medical services the Moravian Church of Tanzania has set itself the task to offer youths the chance to get vocational training as carpenters, car mechanics, tailors and shoe makers in one of its vocational training centres. By doing so, they not only enable youths to earn their daily living. It is also a positive element in the fight against unemployment.
additinal information: www.herrnhuter-missionshilfe.de South Africa The Moravian Church in South Africa (MCSA) owns various institutions caring for disabled and deprived people, for example >Elim<, a home for handicapped children and >Sive<, a school for deaf-mute people. Its economic activities extend to the making of shoes, production of tea as well as agriculture in general. Many fields are rented out to local farmers who in most cases are members of the church. In the village of Wupperthal where Moravian missionaries founded a mission post in 1865 they produce both rooibos tea and soap. In a project run by unemployed young women they are given the chance to earn their own income. North India The main purpose of the Moravian Institute in Rajpur (nearby Dehra Dun) is to offer education to deprived students from various backgrounds. On the compound of the institute there is also a handicraft and carpet workshop. This workshop offers women the chance to support themselves, their families and also to earn money to pay for school fees for their children.
